Ruth Bader Ginsburg Story And Theme T-shirts

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has a Supreme Court Justice, lawyer, women’s rights advocate, and pop culture icon, means a lot to people. Whether you first encountered her name while discussing the Women’s Rights Court’s decision or on the website of the notorious RBG that proclaimed her, there is no doubt that she had a significant impact on the world today. In honor of this influential and inspiring lawyer, advocate, and Supreme Court Justice, we have compiled quotes related to her and the stories behind them.

The Life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Born Joan Ruth Bader in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933, Ginsburg excelled in school. She completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in government at Cornell University in 1954 and was the highest-achieving female student in her graduating class. A month after graduation, she married Martin D. Ginsberg, but neither she nor her husband saw married life as signaling the end of her career aspirations, as was common at the time. Ginsburg entered Harvard Law School in 1956, one of nine women in a class of 500.

When her husband took a position in New York City, she transferred to Columbia Law School. Although she graduated tied for first in her class in 1959 and was highly recommended by the dean of Harvard Law School, Ginsburg was turned down for a clerkship with the Supreme Court justices because of her gender. She took an internship with a New York District Court judge and later founded the Women’s Rights Law Reporter, the first legal journal focused on women’s rights in the U.S. In the 1970s, she taught at Columbia Law School, becoming the first woman to receive tenure, and co-authored the law school’s first casebook on sex discrimination.

Ginsburg co-founded the Women’s Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 1972 and, as its lead litigator, argued several landmark classes before the Supreme Court, including Reed v. Reed, which first extended the Equal Protection Clause — the equal protection of the law — to women. Ginsburg served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for 13 years until she was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993, becoming the second woman to sit on the Supreme Court.

On the Supreme Court, Ginsburg was known for issuing sharp dissenting opinions and being one of the Court’s leading advocates for advancing women’s legal rights.

Ginsburg served on the Supreme Court for more than 27 years until her death from pancreatic cancer on Sept. 18, 2020, at the age of 87. Throughout those years of service, Ginsburg continued to bring her unique perspective and decades of legal experience to Supreme Court decisions.

Ginsburg was first given her Notorious RBG moniker — a play on rapper Biggie Smalls’ Notorious B.I.G. moniker — in 2013 when NYU law student Shana Knizhnik created a Tumblr bearing the name to highlight Ginsburg’s role in the dissenting opinion in the landmark Supreme Court case Shelby County v. Holder.

The name was popular, to say the least, and as Ginsburg’s popularity and reputation grew, so did the use of her “Notorious” RBG nickname.

In offering advice to young women, Ginsberg said “Fight for the things that you care about but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” She later added that now is a better time than any for women to go after what they want. “Young women today have a great advantage, and it is that there are no more closed doors,” Ginsburg said.
